From UWA to a diverse array of industries
Since completing my Master’s degree at UWA in 2009, I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to work for several companies within a diverse array of industries. This included Chevron (oil and gas), Racing and Wagering, Virgin Australia (aviation) to Woolworths (logistics and retail). I have also widened my skillset by continuing my presenting and producing assignments in the local media industry, as well as my not-for-profit board work with the United Nations Association in WA.
My initial professional roles focused on the human resources and industrial functions within organisation’s, based on my initial double-degree being Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Commerce (HR and IR). This provided me with great context relating to the organisational structure of a business and the importance of adjusting one’s style to meet stakeholder requirements. I then transitioned into a substantive Organisational Psychology-related role and I am currently the Principal for Organisational Services at PeopleSense by Altius.
Your own connection with your values
I am passionate about engaging people to be the best versions of themselves. I believe that we can all play a role at many levels: organisational, group and individual. However, importantly it starts with your own connection with your values. This ensures that you can effectively scope and leverage your skill base to assist others. Professionally, I would like to leverage my passion, belief and connection with the United Nations by encouraging a more socially responsible organisational climate for the greater good of all of us. This can be achieved through the acknowledgement of the role of the UN Global Compact guiding us.
A career of continuous opportunity
I am so grateful to have a career that provides such continuous opportunities to meet new people and expand my own own skillset. It provides the opportunity to consistently apply innovative solutions through both an evidence-based and innovative approach, to ultimately assist people to be the best versions of themselves and then collectively for organisations to thrive as opposed to just survive. In the future, I would like to intertwine my skillset further and bring media, psychology and the UN together.
International Women’s Day - a time to reflect
International Women’s Day is an opportunity for us to reflect on the positive progress in the provision of equal opportunities that should be afforded to all human beings, the growing base of understanding and support from both genders in relation to the important and everchanging roles of males and females, and finally, an opportunity to celebrate the fabulous achievements of some of our female role models.
Words of wisdom for new students
Be curious, ask questions and seize opportunities.
