UWA and me

UWA was my launch pad; a defining period. After completing a BSc at UWA, I continued with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy at Curtin University. Immediately after graduation I worked at Royal Perth Hospital in orthopaedics, neurology, respiratory and oncology.

Later, after running my own practice in Melbourne, my passion for travel took me to Cairo where I treated a wide cross section of the Egyptian community, from desert Bedouin to movie stars and even the president’s family. I continued to travel extensively and have always found great support and assistance through the UWA connections I made over 20 years ago.

Combining Art, Medicine and Science for positive change

On return to Perth I reignited my love for painting. My travels opened my eyes and I felt we can all do something to make positive change.

My peers were making great advances in science, yet struggling financially to advance their work, so I decided to combine my passions. I now contribute to my community through Art, Medicine and Science.

My exhibitions raise awareness and funds for health causes. Most recently for Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle bones). By hosting art and medicine talks, and PR strategies, I find ways to give specialists a platform to communicate the latest research and treatments.

The ripple effect

The flexibility to live and work all over the globe has been one of the most interesting parts of my career. Having two degrees from world class universities was crucial.

The variety of experiences taught me to be open to taking risks, to embrace change and to relish meeting new people.

Now, I enjoy bringing all my experiences, knowledge and contacts together. Connecting people in art, science and medicine to collaborate is inspiring. Making a difference, even if small, in this way, I believe, is powerful. It makes us a better community and the ripple effect can go global.

Words of wisdom for new students

Immerse yourself fully. Surround yourself with like-minded people. Ask questions, and listen to advice, even if you don’t like it! Be true to yourself and your passions. Be organised, so you can work hard and have fun too.
